Always try One More Thing

People ask me every single day what advice I would give to parents of newly diagnosed kids. It’s a big question and I can think of so many things I would tell them.

But one thing, the most important thing, the one that I feel is vital is…

Always try one more thing. I can’t tell you how important it is.

When I have been at my lowest, not knowing how to help my misunderstood little boy, both of us beat down by this world, I’ve wanted to give up. And maybe for a few moments I did.

Begging doctors to listen. Screaming for help. Desperately trying to help him feel better. Trying to find programs that would not only take him but also see his value and treasure him.

It was like being in a long hallway, doors slamming shut. Me screaming. No one listening.

We needed services.
We needed supports.
We needed help.
We needed resources.

Families are being failed every day. Most don’t want to hear that. But they are. It’s the truth.

No one would help me help my son.

But I tried one more thing. Made one more phone call. Sent one more email. Researched one more program. One more school. Dug for other options. For hope. Refused to give up on him.

I tell you this because no one else is going to fight for your kid like you will. They need you to be that person for them. To never give up and to fight tirelessly.

Always, always, try one more thing moms and dads.

Because that one thing…that could be the one thing that saves their life.
