Keep Working on Independence
See that little one there? The one with chocolate on his face and holding two nerf guns? He is 2 years old and came out of the womb independent. His favorite thing to say is…‘I do it mama. I do it.’ He needs help from no one. My now 8 year old was the same way.
Cooper, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3, was always the opposite. He’s never, to this day, had any desire to ‘do it himself.’ He’s very happy and content having mom and dad dress him, grab him a snack, hold his hand, put his shoes on, buckle his seatbelt, brush his teeth, and so on.
As his parents, we realized early on it was going to take some motivation to push him towards his best version of independence. But it can be a challenge too. We push too hard and it’s stressful for him. We don’t want that. We don’t push hard enough and he doesn’t learn new skills. And we are aging and won’t be around forever.
We had some hard years figuring it all out. It’s our job as his parents to prepare him for the world and keep him happy and safe at the same time. We walk that line daily.
Cooper is 10 and he can now independently put on his shoes, brush his teeth, buckle his seatbelt, get dressed, and so on. With a little encouragement of course. His progress has been amazing to watch. Everything used to be an adamant no from him. Now he’s willing to try. What more could we ask for?
Focus on independence moms and dads. It’s so important for our kids.
PS. That baby will totally put Cooper’s shoes on for him so we are working on having him give verbal praise to big brother. If you were here you would hear the tiniest voice saying…’you can do it Cooper!’
It’s pretty sweet.
