Don’t Count Our Kids Out
Who needs some joy today?
This kid had his first school conference in three years yesterday. He’s a big fourth grader now.
And like I’ve known all along…he’s amazing.
He’s joyful. Happy. Cuddly. Loves giving hugs. So smart.
He knows so many sight words and is amazing on his speech device. The goal for me is typing words. I can’t wait until we can have a typed conversation.
His bus driver and aide love him. His driver told me he hits the bumps for him because it makes him so happy.
His brother hugs him in the hallway.
He’s learning math too!
And the best update…he is able to recover and get back to his happy self quickly after having a hard time. Mere minutes.
He loves circle time too and can participate fully. He also leads other students over when it’s time.
You may think I’m overly happy. Well, yes. I am. Because while I’ve known how smart and wonderful my son is…for years, no one else seemed to see it. Meetings were negative. Sad. We spoke about aggressions and safety concerns.
Almost as if they counted him out. Severe, nonverbal autism? Well, let’s lower the bar.
I raised it and will continue too. These kids, these amazing complicated confusing kids, have so much potential.
Find the teachers, therapists and bus drivers who believe that too.
Proud parents over here. And thankful for the good people in our life.
