A Letter to my Autistic Son

Dear sweet son,

If you tell me why you fill my bathtub with stuff I will buy you a car. Or a real, life size, train car. Or all the Cheetos you could ever want. In fact, you name your price. I’ll buy it.

I just need to know why emptying a shower of soap, shampoo and conditioner and walking it over to the bathtub makes so much sense to you. I want to know who you place each item so meticulously. I want to know why you are happiest doing this. And why it feels so right to you. Because until someone has watched you do this, they will never truly understand the joy it brings you. You sigh as you place each item. You dance and laugh. And clap when you are done. And you check back during the day to make sure every item is exactly where you placed it.

So, remember, I’m on your side. I want you to be your happiest self. And, I bend my old pregnant ass self over to grab my toothbrush twice a day.

So…do me a favor and tell me why. I deserve it. I just want a glimpse into that beautiful mind of yours.

Sincerely, your mom…who is slowly going crazy.

PS. You are probably the cutest thing I’ve been seen.
